Medicine of the year contest 2020

Hungarian Society for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology announces the
Medicine of the Year 2020” contest

The Hungarian Society for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology (HUPHAR) founded the “Medicine of the Year” award in 1997. The prize consists of a large bronze relief created by visual artist Tamás Asszonyi of Szentendre, and a certificate. The trademark-protected award was designed to use its professional prestige to advance the noble cause of promoting the spread of the most state-of-the-art, effective and patient-friendly products and helping new therapeutic procedures to become established in Hungary.

Contest criteria

1 Pharmaceutical manufacturing and/or distribution companies that are Platinum Level Patron Members of the HUPHAR, preferably with a grant agreement with the HUPHAR for membership financial contribution, are eligible for entering. The conditions of Platinum Level Patron Membership are included in the annex to the contest notice as well as in the announcement for membership available on the Society’s website.

2 Medicinal products with a marketing authorisation in the EU and/or Hungary (issued between 1 January 2016 and 1 January 2020) can be submitted as entries.

3 Entries must contain the essential details of the medication underlying the marketing authorisation issued by the competent authority, a brief summary of further information gained since then, the number and date of the registration and the marketing authorisation, and a declaration whether the medicine has been included in the Hungarian social health insurance formulary.

4 An explanation of why the medicine represents a major advance in the relevant therapeutic area (see detailed review criteria) must be attached separately (2 to 4 A4 pages).

5 Entries must be submitted in one printed and signed copy to the following address:

6 A Review Panel will be set up by the Board of the HUPHAR to review the received entries and will issue its professional opinion relying on input from third-party experts. The Board of the HUPHAR will make a recommendation to the general meeting regarding the granting of the award by secret ballot, and the final decision will be made by the general meeting. The experts consulted may not have a legal relationship involving work with a pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution company registered in Hungary.

7 Review criteria (in comparison with competitor products if applicable):

  • Novelty of the mode of action
  • Breakthrough potential of the chemical and/or biological scientific discovery
  • Medicine meets unmet needs in the relevant therapeutic area in Hungary
  • Favourable adverse reaction and interaction profiles
  • Favourable metabolic and pharmacokinetic properties  
  • Improved therapeutic efficiency  
  • Cost efficiency and user friendliness
  • Added R&D value in Hungary
  • Market turnover in Hungary

8 HUPHAR is entitled to suspend granting of the award or, in exceptional cases, grant two equivalent awards, in any given year. The winner is entitled to use the “Medicine of the Year 2020” title.

9  The deadline for submitting entries: 15 January 2021

10 Date of announcement of the winner: March 2020 The awards ceremony will be organised jointly by the HUPHAR and the winner of the award. The date and venue of the awards ceremony will be notified by the Society at a later date.
